flying in the spirit" |
The Golden
Peacock is a wondrously beautiful mythical bird that crosses cultures
and whose origins are in the ancient myths on the creation of
Man and the world and the meaning of life. In Greek mithology,
the peacock was the reincarnation of the legendary creature Argos
of the Thousand Eyes. After it was slain by Hermes, Hera put its
eyes on the peacock's tail. Although peacock is not mentioned
by name in the Bible, the ancient Aramaic translations of the
Scriptures Translate the world "Tukian", "Tussin",
from the Persian, and it is mentioned that King Solomon brought
them from afar. An ancient belief, mentioned by Augustine, holds
that the peacock's flesh never rots, and it's feathers that are
renewed every spring, gave rise to the ancient Christian belief
that it symbolizes the resurrection of the dead.
In Islam, the peacock intermingles with Iblis (Satan) and the
Serpent of original sin. When Adam and Eve were expelled from
the Garden of Eden, the serpent and the peacock were expelled
with them and the peacock took the former's beautiful voice.
In India, the peacock is a secret bird and it is forbidden to
harm it. There are those who perceive it as their totem, seeds
are sacrificed to it but looking at it is to be avoided lest it
harm you.
In Judaism, the idea of the Golden Peacock developed which symbolizes
the lost links with the past. Di Goldene Paveh mentioned in Yiddish
literature is not the common, zoological, colorful peacock, but
an ideal, a kind of meta-peacock that bears a special message
for mankind. The "eyes" that are part of its feathers
seems to provide a perspective and panoramic view of the world,
eyes that fly in the spirit, looking both back into the past and
into the future. The Jewish Golden Peacock is able to soar and
climb to the heights and it is , perhaps, the bird that is closest
to the Heavenly Throne, Its eyes hold an ancient secret.
When the Golden Peacock is linked with its ancient sources and
traditions while aspiring to fly towards a future of growth and
renewal, its wingspan with its fabric of feathers is revealed
to us and with it a source of beauty, magic and grandeur.
