Excerpts
from Reviews:
The first eight minutes of 'A Child is Dancing' encompasses
the essence of the musical world of the Livnat brothers who,
until today, were known chiefly for their integration of Jewish
music with jazz. This is a melodious piece which starts off
in a low-key and then flows in an emotional and very melancholic
strain with a jazz intonation, and at the same time has a
mood of something French a la Francis Lee and Michel Legrand...The
reflective, plaintive sound of 'A Child's Dream' on soprano
saxophone is reminiscent of Pat Metheny's ambient music. Here,
too, the brothers manage to create a mystic atmosphere embellished
with faint piping effects...Arik Livnat's flute sounds trillingly
in 'Lullaby,' written for 'Blood Wedding' by Lorca...The Livnat
brothers are musicians who take nothing for granted. They
absorbed Jewish music and jazz but are searching all the while
and achieving poetry in a musical fusion full of soul...They
deliver creative moments of great beauty and even deep emotion
in a disc that presents an array of the best of their gifts
and musical colours.

A Child's Dream is a blend of older revamped material
and newer tunes, with the Livnat brothers at the helm of their
new soothing musical journey down memory lane. In their fourth
album, Aviv and Arik Livnat explore previously recorded but
undeveloped themes, specially remixed for this year's release. The
eight tracks reflect the album's mood, with numbers such as
"A Child is Dancing," "Nostalgia," "Good
Children," and of course the title track, encapsulating
the brothers' reminiscences on their shared artistic childhood.
Some of the music was originally written for theater and dance
performances here in Israel... Within the album's multi-layered
ambient feel, the purity of line and uncomplicated song structures
remain unspoiled, smacking of a musical sophistication while
retaining simplicity. That is no child's play.
Although the album is instrument-based, the brothers have
employed technical effects which add intrigue to the otherwise
soporific feel of the disc.
Aviv, the older of the two, plays a sensual guitar and his
vocals are featured on "Good Children," one of the
highlights of the disc. Backed by a rich string section and
appropriately placed singers, the tune has an almost calypso
feel of cool breezes and reassuring peace.
Arik, the reedman is featured throughout on various saxophones
and flutes, adding at times humorous riffs on more staid themes...
Amanda Borschel (Jerusalem Post)
"The
brothers Aviv and Arik Livnat are creative artists working
in Israel and abroad. Their main speciality lies in combining
original jazz with traditional Jewish music. Their latest
album, 'A Child's Dream,' contains pieces of original music,
and one song that the two of them arranged over the past few
years as works for dance, movies, and theater. Even though
the disc cannot be described as music for children par excellence,
nearly all the pieces in it connect to the world of childhood;
take, for example, some of their names: 'A Child is Dancing
- duet,' 'Lullaby,' 'Good Children' and, of course, 'A Child's
Dream.' The album is very pleasant on the ear, and it can
also serve beautifully as soothing background music while
you are busy with your kids."
